Prevent lung disease and promote lung health: the mission of the American Lung Association.  As the mission statement says, the American Lung Association of Ohio is working to create a world free of lung disease.  Founded in 1901 as the Ohio Society for the Prevention of Tuberculosis (TB), roughly one in four Ohioans were affected in some way by Tuberculosis.  During the first decade of the organization’s existence, the focus was on building hospitals and TB education.  In many areas of Ohio, you can still find buildings which had once been used as “Sanatorium,” as the treatment facilities were known.

  Ways to Give

Funding for the fight against TB was borrowed from a Danish idea when Emily Bissell began the idea of Christmas Seals in 1907.  By 1909, the funds raised by Christmas Seals had soared to $250,000 nationwide.  Still today, millions of Americans participate in the annual Christmas Seal Campaign.

In the years to follow, the organization took on many health issues, including:

Establishing grass roots local association in various areas of the state

Becoming the Ohio Public Health Association

Study of hygiene and its relationship to TB

Providing community x-ray sessions and the advent of new medicines

Turning its interest to other areas of lung disease including Smoking Cessation, School Health

Education and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

With its new mission and focus came a new name- the Ohio Lung Association.  And since 1982, the American Lung Association of Ohio with the mission of the prevention of lung disease and control of all lung diseases –because- when you can’t breathe, nothing else matters.

Special Events and fundraising play a vital role in our ability to fund programs designed to help people with lung disease stay healthy and lead active lives.  The American Lung Association of Ohio is a leader in tobacco control and a leading public advocate for lean air.  We also offer facilitate workshops to prepare community leaders to implement a variety of health promotion programs.  Similarly, continuing education seminars are also offered to improve the knowledge and skills of health care practitioners as they work to diagnose and treat lung disease.

Today, the American Lung Association of Ohio is dedicated to the mission through education, community outreach, research and advocacy.  For more than 80 years, the organization has funded research that has led to lifesaving treatments.  Today, our support of the Asthma Clinical Research Centers allows researchers to work on improving treatment for asthma, with the goal of finding a cure.  The American Lung Association of Ohio is dedicated to funding and supporting research on all types of lung disease.

You can help advance the mission of the American Lung Association today by making a secure donation.  Thank you for your interest and support!
