Healthy Ohioans
In July 2005, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) created a partnership with the American Lung Association® of Ohio.  This one-year project, through the Healthy Ohioans initiative, will run through fiscal year ’05-’06 and is part of the multi-year, statewide initiative under the direction of Gov. Bob Taft.

If you would like more information on Healthy Ohioans, click here to visit the Healthy Ohioans website.

Healthy Ohioans (HO) encourages and supports Ohioans as they make better choices and live longer, healthier lives. This program stresses the importance of healthy lifestyles, encouraging all Ohioans to be physically active, eat nutritious foods and avoid the use of tobacco.

The overall goal of this collaborative project with Healthy Ohioans is to reduce the burden of chronic disease through outreach, awareness, and education, with an emphasis on the linkages between healthy behaviors and control or prevention of chronic disease.

  Ways to Give

As defined by the Ohio Department of Health, the major focus area for the Healthy Ohioans project is Appalachian counties.  Often an underserved region, ALAO is committed to providing information, resources and services to Ohio’s Appalachian counties.   These 29 priority counties were decided upon by the Ohio Department of Health.  All local health departments in targeted communities will receive information on project activity and happenings in their communities.  For a full listing of all programs and trainings, visit www.ohiolung.org.

Much of the work of The
American Lung Association® of Ohio focuses on:

Training facilitators to offer evidence-based tobacco prevention programs

School-based Asthma education

Tobacco prevention and cessation programs

Asthma management

Providing disease prevention materials to companies through worksite wellness

Education programs

Creating and maintaining new health care partnerships through development of a Pilot Lung Health Center Concept in four hospitals. The pilot centers will train hospital staff in core ALAO programs, develop marketing partnerships, host educational seminars and conferences among other activities.

These goals will be accomplished, in part, through collaboration with community agencies, health departments, school groups, hospitals, and health care professionals.

The toll free 1-800-LUNG-USA American Lung Association Lung HelpLine, providing answers to lung health questions, will be heavily promoted statewide.  Aligning with tobacco cessation goals, Freedom From Smoking online,
www.ffsonline.org is an area of increased focus.

ALAO has partnered with 4-H.  Last year, 4-H was an instrumental partner in piloting the Jump Into Food & Fitness (JIFF) curriculum in nine Ohio counties.  JIFF provides ALAO a forum to educate trainers and volunteers on issues related to asthma, accessing resources of the American Lung Association® of Ohio, and other related topics into the existing training curriculum.

American Lung Association® of Ohio will sponsor and provide scholarships to the State Planning Committee for Health Education in Ohio (SPCHEO).
