Camp SUPERKIDS® 2006
The American Lung Association® of Ohio is offering asthma education through day camps and resident camp programs in 2006. All summer camping programs are
offered free of charge to Ohio's children, although voluntary contributions to defray costs are accepted.
Resident camps are scheduled for June 18 to 23 at Camp Libbey, Defiance, and July 16 to 22 at Camp Kern, near Oregonia.
Day camps are pending for 2006.
Camp SUPERKIDS® Resident Camp Program
The Camp SUPERKIDS® resident camp program is open to boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 12.
Although families are given the opportunity to make a voluntary contribution to defray expenses, this program is offered without charge to the children with asthma.
The cost of this program is met through public support of the fundraising efforts of the American Lung Association of Ohio.
Camp SUPERKIDS is designed to teach asthma self-management skills
while allowing children with asthma to enjoy an outdoor living experience while
under the supervision of an on-site volunteer medical staff of physicians,
nurses and respiratory therapists.
The children will learn:
How asthma affects their lungs
How to identify the early warning signs of asthma and what to do when they occur
How to use medications and equipment
How to do breathing and stress-reducing exercises
How to handle feelings that are common among children with asthma
They will also experience typical camp experiences such as swimming, hiking, crafts, songs, games and more.
Registration is limited and all preliminary applications must be received by May 1 for consideration. Campers, who must be under a physician's care for asthma, are selected on the basis of the severity of their asthma; the evaluation of the Camp Medical Committee; the date that their application is received; and prior attendance at camp. Preference is given to first time campers.
Both resident camp programs run from Sunday through Friday with Camp Libbey from June 18 to 23 and Camp Kern from July 16 to 22.
